Antennas

Last spring I bought a one to one balun with the intention of building a 80 meter balun, maybe. It was going to be at least 40 meters, but probably 80 meters if not 160 meters. Somewhere in there I went to conneticut, did summer school and it got really hot. I also, using another one to one balun figure out how to build and hang a three band (40,20 and 17 meters) fan dipole. The fan dipole is working very nicely after a summer of fiddling with the length of the wires and various ropes and pullies to get it up in the air, but I’m no closer to being on the air for 80 meters. That has lead me to a number of considerations. I started by thinking about a bent rhombic, the same or similar one in Salty Walt’s book. Four wavelengths of wire, a twelve to one balun and a six hundred ohm resistor for termination. But a bent rhombic is just a terminated dipole. It would get me on 80 meters with option of going higher if I wanted to, but, it is a lot of wire. And, you can’t do much with a twelve to one balun other than terminated dipoles and you can’t do much at all with a big resistor. Money, the cost for the balun and terminator put me off that one. That lead me to thinking about other sorts of loops. Well, I say loops, loops come in all sorts of shapes but , if you use a four to one balun, the can function as multi-band antennas. Again, lots of wire, but, enouogh optionss, that I bought a four to one balun. That brought me to offcenter fed dipoles. They can be reasonably compact even on 80 meters, are multiband and, as of now, I have all the stuff to build and deploy one. I am thinking I may go start measureing this this afternoon and see how far I get.
